Vibe Coding
There’s been a lot of vibe coding tweets popping off that I’ve seen and interacted with that has got me wondering about future prospects of a career in programming.
I think it all started with Karpathy’s now infamous tweet:
Giving into the vibes and coding something up very quickly for yourself is pretty cool, if you have the right sense of design, taste, and proompting capabilities to guide whatever generative AI model(s) you are using to manifest from written/spoken natural language…Obviously the next step is to have brain computer interfaces (no we’re not going to all trust elon musk and put neuralink chips in our heads just yet) that you can physically wear and have either another model inbetween or a hand rolled program that takes your mesured electrical brainwaves and translates that into text and then feed that into these gen AI models. I don’t think it would be likely that these AI engineers/researchers will create models that allow for direct electrical brain waves into output media, where will they get the training data…
Vibe coding kind of got more popular on tech twitter after levelsio’s plane game kind of got popular started to make him a lot of money from people advertising and buying stuff in his game:
Pieter has a history of shipping websites that become businesses that make him a lot of money before gen AI hit the scene, and now with gen AI to help with generating and editting code, it helps him and anyone else with a brain to make web apps. A lot of people will now be able to blietzkrieg making free phone/browser games that maybe you can charge $0.99 for or just show ads and hope it goes viral and get a lot of people to look at it and make you money. The primary objective of these products is to make money by shipping something working fast and improve it later. MVP and then iterate while people are still interested in your product. It’s not a craftsman approach, where you meticulously design and spend a lot of time deliberating every little detail a long time before the thought of marketing comes. You can find much better games out there that will never see the light of day who was made by some indie developer who poured their heart and soul into. This is just what happens.
This whole ordeal is interesting to me because it can be something to start a conversation about on so many different things. First, it is apparently really hard to talk about ethics/morality because that’s party pooper vibes usually. On one side you have builders who have the practical mindset that “the genie ain’t going to back in the bottle, the models have been trained and deployed and usable to practically anyone, just ship bro, just ship. you don’t need to know, you don’t need to understand, you just need to make things work. and if you have the right idea, you can prompt your way forward and sell something to some fool who can’t do it themself with the same exact tools/proompting skill/know how” and I think the other side is “no we can’t use these tools they were trained off of many many stolen works of human beings, many copyright laws were broken, some of these companies are assasinating their whistleblowers, a shit ton of exploitative labor was utilized in creating the training data, and this tech is evil bc it will and has caused massive unemployment of humans in a lot of different careers”
I sympathize people who truly believe that current AI developments will absolutely accelerate towards a very dystopian hellscape of a world. I don’t really know how many anti-ai groups have come about but just imagine how many people have been radicalized and fell into doomerism mental death spirals or deep depressions from Eliezer Yudkowsky’s very well written wordcel arguments, or other groups like I don’t know Stop AI or Pause AI. I think if you believe this worldview, you would logically follow through and start organizing for civil disobedience to try to change the current systems (ofc there are a bunch of other reasons you could’ve done this for) but if that is what you believe than do that.
If you don’t believe that future is anywhere close, it probably makes more logical sense to be thinking “What actions can I take to potentially maximize my own gains in this situation” unless you are an empath and think “What actions can I take to potentially maximize my ability to help as many people out there as I can”. I don’t think you should be maximally selfless btw…Is this selfish-coded?
Some will say that if you teach a kid vibe coding today, you teach them to create tech debt for life…xd
go vibe code your next b2b saas $1 million MRR app.
Vibe code away but do not delude yourself into thinking that you have a deep understanding of what you just generated without actually putting in the work of sifting through every single line generated and reviewing its purpose and whether or not it should be there or changed or removed to be optimized. But hey, we’re vibe coding here, just ask the AI to do that for you…
Ok no but I think AI can be really helpful, you have to be careful. Wrestle with the genie.
Anyways, I’m just now realizing I do not program for the sake of the outputs. Vibe coding is about coding for the sake of creating something useful. While I kind of I hope to be paid for “just programming”, unfortunately, I kind of just like learning and understanding the computer systems I’m using and surrounded by and getting into the flow of programming things. I think I’ll need to start pivoting and forcing myself to wake up to reality. In every facet of a human’s life you are judged for your output. Your output of your thoughts, your performance of your gender, your performance of your perceived social status, your skills, your ability to love, your ability to manipulate the world around you to your wishes! I mean yes, don’t you want to live in a world where you are judged by the merit of your abilities, and not something else? Anonymous blogs is a kind of poison for me, I do it knowing it’s not good for me, it’s a waste of time. I’m supposed to be maximizing shareholder value! I’m supposed to be getting laid!
I can’t live in my parent’s proverbial basement forever, and it seems we all have to monetize something in our lives to live, be it our physical labor, mental labor, body, mind, or soul. Do I jump on the bandwagon and give fully into the vibes? Blietzkrieg web apps that sell nothing to everyone? Blietzkrieg ai slop nfts to sell to scammers? Shit coin rug pulls? Don’t do this. It’s not who you are, eat a snickers, wake up babe, new meditatingcatgirl.xyz post…
Create things for your own sake, don’t make art because it’s “a deeply human activity”…do it bc you enjoy it. Don’t do things for the plot, for the imaginative narrative of your life story that you are crafting in your mind or for you to tell constantly pester and tell your future children (like that’s ever going to happen) about. Just live bro.
This is not a doomerism post. We don’t do that anymore. Follow your dreams, the economy and job market is cooked anyways. Start schizo posting more. Quit pornography. Don’t go monk-mode tho, that sounds kind of cringe. Do things for the love of the game, whatever your love and game are…Except if it’s being a pedophile or rapist prolly don’t do that and get some help cuz. Anyways, let us beginning the goon session schizo posting

This is enough schizo posting for me today. As my neocortex continues to physically mature, I hope to be able to share equally entertaining and actually educational content in the future. It will not necessarily be original and likely just be sharing other people’s things, because I truly wonder where my creative human engine is, it seems to have gotten lost in shipment when I was born…but I’ll try!
